Eighteen holes by Perry Dye and Seve Ballesteros beside Sotogrande, set among cork oaks with views of the Mediterranean.
The Breeze of Golf
San Roque Golf & Resort is the home of the New Course, an 18-hole, par-72 layout beside Sotogrande, in the municipality of San Roque. Playing golf in Sotogrande here means 6,079 metres from the back tees, across 45 hectares of fairways, lakes and cork oaks, with the Mediterranean in view.
The course was designed by Perry Dye with Severiano Ballesteros. In 2006 it hosted the Spanish Open, won by Niclas Fasth at the fourth play-off hole. Discover the course in more detail before you travel.
The New Course moves between risk-and-reward holes and others that demand pure precision. The 4th is a par 3 across a ravine, with seven bunkers and a green more than 40 metres deep. The 7th, stroke index 1, is a 513-metre par 5 with the sea in view from the tee.
The finish keeps the tension going: a par 5 reachable in two at the 16th, then an 18th with water to the right, built to settle a matchplay. Walk it first with the New Course hole-by-hole guide and check the official slope rating.
You will find the course on the N-340 at km 127, reached from the A-7. Puerto de Sotogrande is about 16 minutes away and Gibraltar International Airport about 25, so a round fits easily into a short trip or a longer golf break.
Times are approximate and depend on traffic and, from Gibraltar, on the border crossing. Flying in? Read our guide to golf near Gibraltar.
Golf in Sotogrande and the surrounding area includes some of southern Spain’s best-known courses, among them Valderrama, Real Club de Golf Sotogrande, La Reserva and Almenara. Travelling golfers often combine several in the same week.
The New Course adds its own signature to that route: Perry Dye’s lines, the hand of Seve Ballesteros and a European Tour past. It is an independent venue and should not be confused with the Old Course, which belongs to The San Roque Club.
The club has a Pro Shop, buggies, trolleys and club hire, so you can travel light. After your game, La Criolla serves Argentinian grill.
